[we feel] wall ~ichi-go ichi-e, 2024

we feel wall title page

The work, [we feel] wall ~ichi-go ichi-e, is a simple, participatory, mobile phone-based interaction that captures peoples’ feelings at a given moment in time. Scanning a QR code takes the user to a website where they are asked to input three pieces of information: their current mood, the strength of that mood, and a color that best describes how they are feeling. When the user submits their post, they will see a data visualization of their response in a bubble among all the other responses that have been previously posted by strangers. Ichi-go ichi-e in Japanese translates to “one time, one meeting” and means “for this time only” or “once chance in a lifetime,” describing the importance of cherishing a moment in time that will not be experienced again. Users are encouraged to explore their feelings within the context of collective emotion. Each time a new [we feel] wall post is made, a new configuration is created for the visualization. Although users may never interact with the other participants in the same space at the same time, the [we feel] wall presents an opportunity to capture the asynchronous, ephemeral connections among different people, visually, in an online space.
