The premise of this project is to use a sensor to detect colors of reward cards and then to provide an opportunity to spin a wheel if a reward goal has been met. There is a physical and digital aspect of this game that intersects. Unlike traditional reward charts where children are given positive reinforcement for performing good behavior, for this reward system, each person in the family is given a specific color and give another person “gratitude cards” for being helpful, kind, thoughful etc. The idea is to focus less on creating associations of tangible rewards resulting from positive behaviors (and the “what do I get for helping you?” mentality). Instead, the reward will be a collective experience and emphasizes the idea of showing gratitude when someone else has done something that adds value (whether it be cleaning up, getting ready on time, apologizing for mistakes, etc.). At the beginning of the week, parents and kids will set a goal number for the combined total and enter it in the p5js editor. Throughout the week, both kids and parents can work together recognize gratitude for each other. Toward the end of a week, the family members reconvene and take turns adding the collected cards into the slot of the sensor. If enough cards have been collected, family members can spin a wheel (once or more times) to win a prize.
