stuck in an elevator, 2008

The prompt for this assignment was to illustrate “being stuck in an elevator.” My initial reaction was that being stuck, in general, was not a positive experience. Yet, as I thought about it more, I began to think about the conditions or human experience within which a person entered a stuck position and the conditions or human experience within which a person left such a position. I felt that this was just as important as the conditions within which they were stuck. For example, an author of a novel may initially go into the writing process with excitement after receiving the go-ahead from a publisher. Yet at some point, she may have writer’s block, and feel stuck. At some point, because of a catalyst, she may recover from her writers block to successfully finish her book. The idea of using the Cartesian Plane came to me because it allowed me to simplify the human condition into four distinct, yet interconnected ideas. The video is separated in two acts. The first act explains my process of thinking using rough sketches. The second act provides four stories that illustrate the four experiences. Tools: Final Cut Pro
